About the Position

Medical Examiners in Maricopa County are charged by state statute with directing death investigations involving cases in the public interest, including those affecting the criminal justice and public health systems. Successful applicants will be expected to direct medicolegal death investigations, perform postmortem examinations in compliance with the National Association of Medical Examiners (N.A.M.E.) Forensic Autopsy Standards, document findings in narrative reports, take overnight calls from investigations staff, and offer objective consultation and/or court testimony to outside agencies, including criminal court officials and law enforcement.
 
Our Medical Examiners are assigned dedicated days for on-call coverage, exams, completing paperwork and court testimony, and teleworking.  Our Medical Examiners also receive 80 hours of vacation leave banked upon hire, 80 hours of sick leave banked upon hire, 1-week annual conference leave (expenses paid by the county), and are able to participate in our Medical Examiner Loan Repayment Program, which offers up to $6,250 per quarter with a maximum total benefit of $100,000 for outstanding, eligible student loans.
 
Non-board certified salary rate may be up to 7% less than final placement following successful board certification in anatomic and forensic pathology.

About the Office of the Medical Examiner 
Join a team dedicated to providing reliable and trustworthy medical investigations of deaths in our community! The Office of the Medical Examiner is a county agency charged under Arizona Law to perform medical investigations of certain types of deaths. The goal of these investigations is to determine the medical cause (disease and/or injury) of the death to help improve the public’s health and safety. Our investigations inform families, the public and its agencies, and other community stakeholders in the hope that future deaths may be prevented. We are looking for individuals to join our collaborative team to provide compassionate service to the people of Maricopa County.
