Program Director of Psychiatric Residency Training (Open)

San Mateo County’s Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (BHRS) seeks an experienced psychiatrist to join our medical leadership team as the Program Director of Psychiatric Residency Training (Supervising Adult Psychiatrist) for our clinical system of care.
 
BHRS operates one of the only community-based psychiatric residency programs in California through an affiliation with San Mateo Medical Center. The Training Program currently has 16 Residents (4 PGY-I; 4 PGY-II; 4 PGY-III, and 4-PGY-IV) and has been a component of the public sector behavioral health system in San Mateo County for decades. This award-winning residency training program is a national leader, offering a comprehensive psychiatry residency program with an emphasis on community psychiatry. We aim to graduate psychiatrists who excel in psychiatric knowledge and clinical skills while also making a deep impact on the lives of our patients, our system of care, and the field of psychiatry.
 
The Program Director of Psychiatric Residency Training is responsible for all activities related to the San Mateo Psychiatric Residency Program including: program administration and operations; clinical teaching and scholarly activity; resident recruitment and selection, including recruitment of diverse residents from groups underrepresented in medicine; resident evaluation and promotion; supervision and education of residents in clinical contexts and oversight of faculty teaching residents; submission of accurate and complete information as required and requested by the Designated Institutional Official (DIO), Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC), and American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME); ensuring the program’s compliance with BHRS and ACGME policies and procedures; and maintaining relationships with multiple other institutions and community health partners in the region such as UCSF, Stanford, Kaiser of Northern California and others, to provide the most diverse and highest quality residency training opportunities.

The Program Director also engages in direct clinical care, serving as a professional role model for high quality patient care. The Program Director’s clinical activity will be tailored to the candidate’s professional interests. This is a full-time position (40hrs), working in collaboration with a BHRS Assistant Program Director of Psychiatric Residency Training, Residency Program Coordinator, the Medical Director, and other supervising psychiatrists.
 
The successful candidate will strive for excellence and innovation in residency education and will demonstrate an understanding of the social determinants of health and health disparities with an ability to incorporate this into the design and implementation of the program curriculum. In addition to the psychiatry residency program, there are opportunities to participate in educational activities related to the Stanford University-San Mateo County Community Child Psychiatry Fellowship, UCSF Community Psychiatry Fellowship, and BHRS Forensic and Addiction Medicine Fellowships.
 
BHRS of San Mateo County, located next to San Francisco, operates or regulates all public sector mental health, substance abuse, and behavioral health services in the County. BHRS is a nationally recognized leader in trauma-informed community mental health services, with a core commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion as guiding principles by which we continuously evaluate and develop our system of care. We have a significant, long-standing institutional dedication of both staff and resources to realizing these core goals of our clients, their families, and our BHRS staff. BHRS has five regional clinics along with specialty clinical teams to support child and adolescents, transitional age youth, older adults, and BHRS clients with intellectual and developmental disabilities. BHRS also supports pediatric and adult primary care county clinics with an embedded primary care interface mental health team. San Mateo Medical Center is the County of San Mateo’s public hospital with outpatient clinics in the health care system. The main hospital campus is a full-service acute hospital with 30 inpatient psychiatric beds and a separate, 24-hour psychiatric emergency unit, along with a medical emergency department, 70 med-surg and ICU beds, and 30 rehab beds.
 
The ideal candidate is board certified in psychiatry with a minimum of 3 years of experience in administrative, educational, and/or supervisory leadership in psychiatry. Must have or be eligible for a medical license in the state of California and Data 2000 X-waiver. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and leadership skills are essential.
 
The position offers a competitive salary and an excellent benefits package which includes County funded malpractice insurance, retirement plans and health benefits for retirees, reimbursement of professional dues and expenses (up to $3,000/year), an additional 5% increase in salary for each qualifying Board certification up to two (2) Boards, administrative leave time at 5 hours per pay period up to 260 hours (this is prorated for part time employees) that can be cashed out up to 50% each Spring, and a wellness program, including exercise classes, worksite massage, and an onsite gym.
