Other Conditions: To begin approximately August 1, 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter. Candidates should have a strong research record in the area of cybersecurity, including system and hardware security, software and application security, network security, cyber forensics, critical infrastructure security, secure and private data services, or related fields, or a strong research record in the area of computer engineering and applications in cyber-physical/IoT systems, Internet/mobile/embedded systems and application, computer systems, robotic systems and application, autonomous vehicles, cloud/edge computing, big-data system and applications, data science/artificial intelligence, next-generation wireless systems, or related fields. The quality of research thus far is an important consideration, as is the potential for establishing an extramurally funded research program. Exceptional candidates in other areas of electrical and computer engineering are encouraged to apply as well. The University of Hawai’i at Manoa is a Carnegie R1 Doctoral University (Highest Research Activity), engaged in building a culturally diverse educational environment with a strong emphasis on research and graduate education. Collaboration, funding opportunities, resources, and research exposure may be found through the department’s involvement and affiliation with the $5 million NSF CyberCorps Scholarship for Service Program (SFS); the NSA/DHS National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Research (CAE-R); the NSF AI Research Institute (focusing on dynamic systems); the NSF Center for Science of Information (focusing on big data, information theory, and machine learning); and Ike Wai, a $20 million NSF EPSCOR project for bio/nano sensing. The Department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering and a B.S. degree in computer engineering. Both B.S. degree programs in electrical engineering and computer engineering are ABET accredited. Current enrollment is approximately 300 undergraduate and 60 graduate students with 19 faculty members. Assistant Professor Duties and Responsibilities

  • To teach assigned undergraduate and graduate-level courses, including via distance delivery modes; 

  • To develop an extramurally funded research program;

  • To conduct and publish research work in leading scholarly journals as a record of scholarly activity;

  • To serve as chair or member of committees in charge of candidates for advanced degrees;

  • To participate in curriculum development activities, including the development of curricular materials and special instructional methods;

  • To supervise independent study activities; 

  • To serve as academic advisor to students;

  • To serve on department, college, and university committees;

  • To render service to the professional or lay community which is relevant to the individual’s academic specialty;

  • To perform related tasks as assigned.

Associate Professor Duties and Responsibilities

In addition to the duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Professor rank,

  • To serve as department chair when selected.

Full Professor Duties and Responsibilities

In addition to the duties and responsibilities of the Associate Professor rank,

  • To assume a role of professional leadership in the department and in the scholarly discipline.

Assistant Professor Minimum Qualifications

  • An earned Ph.D. (ABD will be considered; degree must be earned before the date of hire) in Electrical or Computer Engineering or a closely related discipline from a university of recognized standing by the start date of the position;

  • Demonstrated ability to teach students from different backgrounds with diverse life experiences and learning styles;

  • Demonstrated scholarly achievement, evidenced by a track record of publications; 

  • Effective communication skills for meeting and conferring with diverse colleagues, students, and community members.

  • Ability to engage successfully in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic environment.

Associate Professor Minimum Qualifications

  • An earned Ph.D. in Electrical or Computer Engineering or a closely related discipline from a university of recognized standing by the start date of the position;

  • A minimum of four years of full-time college or university teaching at the rank of assistant professor or equivalent, with evidence of increasing professional maturity.

  • Demonstrated ability to teach students from different backgrounds with diverse life experiences and learning styles;

  • Demonstrated scholarly achievement, evidenced by a track record of publications and adequate for the Associate Professor rank in comparison with peers active in the same field at major research universities; 

  • Demonstrated experience in securing extramural funding;

  • Evidence of participation in the scholarly and academic affairs of a university or other appropriate organization or in an appropriate professional society or organization;

  • Effective communication skills for meeting and conferring with diverse colleagues, students, and community members. 

  • Ability to engage successfully in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic environment.

Professor Minimum Qualifications

  • An earned Ph.D. in Electrical or Computer Engineering or a closely related discipline from a university of recognized standing by the start date of the position;

  • A minimum of four years of full-time college or university teaching at the rank of associate professor or equivalent, with evidence of increasing professional maturity.

  • Demonstrated ability to teach students from different backgrounds with diverse life experiences and learning styles;

  • Demonstrated scholarly achievement, evidenced by a track record of publications that have resulted in significant recognition by the national or international community of scholars active in the same field; 

  • Demonstrated experience in securing extramural funding;

  • Demonstrated the ability to mentor graduate students to completion of M.S. and Ph.D. degrees.

  • Evidence of participation in the scholarly and academic affairs of a university or other appropriate organization or in an appropriate professional society or organization;

  • Demonstrated capacity for leadership in the department and scholarly discipline;

  • Ability to undertake a variety of assignments within the university;

  • Effective communication skills for meeting and conferring with diverse colleagues, students, and community members.

  • Ability to engage successfully in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic environment.

Assistant Professor Desirable Qualifications

  • Strong research record in the area of cybersecurity, including system and hardware security, software and application security, network security, cyber forensics, critical infrastructure security, secure and private data services, or related fields. Or strong research record in the area of computer engineering and applications in cyber-physical/IoT systems, Internet/mobile/embedded systems and applications, computer systems, robotic systems and applications, autonomous vehicles, cloud/edge computing, big-data system and applications, data science/artificial intelligence, next-generation wireless systems, or related fields.    

  • Research focuses on or experiences with Hawai‘i and/or the Asia/Pacific region.

  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.

Associate Professor Desirable Qualifications
