MAJOR FUNCTION:  The Associate Medical Examiner for District 19 is responsible for the investigation of all unattended and non-natural deaths in the counties of Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee and St. Lucie, by performing postmortem autopsies and examinations to determine the cause and manner of death in accepted cases and as deemed necessary. The primary purpose of this position is to provide certified medical and specialized pathology skills in the performance of Office of the Medical Examiner’s mandated cause and manner of death investigation.



The Associate Medical Examiner must: 

  • Possess either an M.D. or D.O. degree, be Board-certified or Board-eligible in Anatomic and Forensic Pathology by the American Board of Pathology preferred, possess Florida medical licensure, and have knowledge of Florida Statue chapter 406 and the Medical Examiners Commission (MEC) rules.    




The essential job functions and responsibilities serving as the Associate Medical Examiner for the Office of the Medical Examiner, District 19 include, but are not limited to: 

  • Perform autopsies to determine the cause and manner of death 
  • Review items related to autopsies such as hospital charts, medical examiner investigator reports, law enforcement agency reports and postmortem results
  • Investigate unnatural deaths by reviewing scene information and photographs, occasionally responding to select scenes, gathering information and evidence from the body, and assist in taking of pictures
  • Dictate and correct written report of autopsy findings in a timely fashion
  • Serve as an expert witness in depositions, grand jury sessions, trials, and conferences with attorneys
  • Participate in conferences with family members, law enforcement, attorneys, and other individuals to provide information on investigations and autopsies
  • Train personnel such as forensic technicians, investigators, and paramedical staff
  • Present lectures for students, officers, and general community
  • Review cases that were reported but not accepted by the investigative division, review cremation requests
  • Perform death scene investigations and other investigations in accordance with the state laws and the office policy manual of District 19
  • Use discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance when required
  • Assist and cooperate with law enforcement agencies
  • Provide strict confidentiality when working with the public and employees
  • Oversee the office in the absence of the Chief Medical Examiner
  • Perform other duties as directed by the Chief Medical Examiner


ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS: This position requires an ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, lift, reach up, stoop, twist and carry items occasionally in excess of twenty-five (25) pounds.  It also requires manual dexterity to operate standard office machines, such as, copier, fax, telephone, and other equipment as necessary.   Person must be healthy and sturdy due to the light physical activity involved and must apply appropriate techniques to reduce the chance of injury due to repetitive hand motions.

SAFETY EQUIPMENT USED OR NEEDED: The Associate Medical Examiner must be comfortable with exposure to blood borne pathogens and potentially other biologic hazards and use personal protective equipment to avoid blood and bodily fluid contamination. Associate Medical Examiner will receive active immunizations for hepatitis B virus, tetanus, and other biologic hazards as requested and agree to permit a thorough background investigation and to provide urine and blood samples on demand as required to conduct random drug tests.
