DNA Validation Analyst

Position Overview:
The DNA Analyst 2, Validation is a senior forensic DNA analyst that performs DNA analysis and interpretation, and case review; may also perform serological examination of physical evidence and DNA Operations casework, including DNA extraction, quantification, amplification, and data analysis; and conducts or assists with validation studies on new/modified procedures and instrumentation.

The DNA Analyst 2 may be called to provide expert testimony in court.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Examines, documents, characterizes, and tests biological evidence submitted for criminal and medicolegal death investigations; operates and maintains laboratory instruments; prepares written reports and other documents that support the resulting analytical findings, formulate professional opinions and interpretations based on these findings, and provides expert witness testimony in legal proceedings; performs batch and case review to ensure compliance with laboratory procedures and accreditation standards (~60%)
  • Conducts or assists with validation studies on new/modified procedures and instruments; develops validation plans to ensure compliance with SWGDAM, QAS, and OSAC validation guidelines; performs DNA analysis for validation studies relevant to an active project; generates, analyzes, reviews, and interprets data from validation data and assists in writing validation summaries; assists in the development of standard operating procedures, implementation of new assays, techniques, and instruments; and maintains laboratory documentation, archives, sample or specimen repositories, and/or lab instrumentation (~40%)
  • Maintains at least a minimum level of productivity as determined by the Director, Forensic Genetics.
  • Successfully completes training, competency testing, and proficiency testing program requirements while maintaining American Board of Criminalistics (ABC) certification and meeting ANAB, TFSC, and FBI Quality Assurance Standards requirements by attending continuing education/training courses, workshops, seminars, and/or professional meetings. Participates in training of new lab employees
  • Provides routine maintenance, calibration, quality control, and laboratory housekeeping tasks as needed; follows all Safety, Quality Assurance/Quality Control, and standard operating procedures, and assists with ensuring the laboratory remains in compliance with ANAB accreditation requirements and the FBI Quality Assurance Standards for Forensic DNA testing laboratories
