DSHS Psychiatric Child Care Counselor 2

Are you enthusiastic about inspiring a culture of safety and making a positive impact in the lives of children and youth with psychological and safety needs?  The Child Study & Treatment Center (CSTC) has permanent, non-permanent, and on-call opportunities available. These are great opportunities for you to gain valuable experience working with children in an in-patient setting! 

In this role, you’ll be the shift charge who directs the staff team and programming for severely emotionally, behaviorally, and psychologically disturbed children and adolescents in a psychiatric hospital setting serving the mental health and forensic admissions.
 
Some of what you’ll be doing:  

  • Provide mentorship and situational counseling to adolescent and pre-adolescent children on the cottages
  • Assign and monitor the work of Psychiatric Child Care Counselor’s
  • Train and monitor staff performance and provides feedback to supervisor
  • Ensure logs, charting, Incident reports, and forms are completed correctly
  • Monitor staff attendance
  • Facilitate the development of social skills, problem-solving and decision-making skills, as well as assist the child with activities of daily living
  • Implement age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate interventions based upon the current treatment plan
  • Maintain a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic milieu in which patients will receive treatment and implement the cottage program and individualized behavioral plans
  • Encourage, supervise and participate with patients in a group or individual recreation, social, and therapeutic activities 

What we’re looking for:  

  • Effectively work with children and adolescent patients, families, other health care workers, and community contacts
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written directions, including those given over a handheld radio
  • Maintaining a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic milieu in which patients will receive treatment

Who should apply?
A Bachelor’s degree with a major study in Social Sciences, Education, Recreation, Psychology or related field and one year of social service experience.
OR
Two years as a Psychiatric Child Care Counselor 1.
OR
Two years of college with emphasis in Social Sciences, Education, Recreation, Psychology, or related field and three years of professional social services or mental health experience.
OR
Additional professional social services or mental health experience may be substituted, year for year, for education. Professional level social services or mental health experience means working full time in the social services or mental health fields.
AND
Per WAC 246-810-010(7), the incumbent must possess and maintain a current Agency Affiliated Counselor or higher counseling related credential from the Washington State Department of Health.
