DSHS WSH Behavior Management Team (BMT) Director

The Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) and Western State Hospital (WSH) are looking for a Behavior Management Team (BMT) Director to implement and manage the BMT, which is a multidisciplinary team that provides short-term consultation to referring ward treatment teams. The BMT focuses on supporting treatment teams whose patients who have high levels of aggressive, assaultive, or other challenging behaviors, including those that result in frequent seclusion or restraint that have not responded to their prescribed treatment.

You’ll be responsible for providing direction, planning, organizing and administering the BMT’s operations that occur on wards in the Gage Center of Forensic Excellence and Civil Center of Excellence. You’ll also develop and maintain policies and procedures that ensure compliance with various governing bodies.

Pierce County employees are eligible to receive an Orca Card for transportation needs.

Some of What You’ll Do

  • Strategically directs, plans, develops and provides leadership and management for the multidisciplinary BMT
  • Ensures that the BMT’s consultation services align with WSH policies and procedures
  • Trains staff in milieu management strategies that can be deployed on referring wards to attenuate acuity
  • Ensures referral recommendations are individualized to the needs of the treatment team and patient.

A Master’s or Doctoral degree in Behavioral Science (Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, Education with a behavioral science core curriculum, etc.).


A minimum of 5-years’ experience working in a psychiatric facility or community behavioral health setting with patients exhibiting aggressive behaviors plus three years supervisory experience.
Skills and Abilities

  • Must demonstrate competency in the use of required evidence-based practices and de-escalation techniques
  • In-depth working knowledge of group and individual behavior, dynamics and clinical intervention
  • Must demonstrate the ability to form therapeutic relationships with people who have psychiatric disabilities, provide evidence-based interventions for challenging behaviors, understand and apply principles of mental illness recovery, develop effective treatment interventions that ward treatment teams can incorporate into treatment planning, and establish collegial relationships with a multidisciplinary team
  • Working knowledge and skills surrounding therapeutic communication, de-escalation techniques, seclusion and restraint principles, and debriefing.
