While this consultant concept was brought to life over 50 yrs ago, it has been re-enlivened and applied to the state hospital model of care. We are searching for an inspiring licensed psychologist to join us to build a powerful and effective team.
Our services provide comprehensive assessment and detailed recommendations to the respective treatment teams. These will include specific psychopharmacologic, medical, behavioral, and other evidence-based interventions and the relevant staff education and training to facilitate their implementations. You’ll help coach, model, and consult ward staff members across the hospital who need support with aggressive, assaultive, or difficult-to-manage patients. Our ward Staff members provide direct care, specialized services, and evidence-based individual/group therapies to adults with severe psychiatric conditions.

$7,500 bonus. ($2,500 post new employee orientation; $2,500 post-probation period; $2,500 after 1-year post-probation period). Bonus is prorated for part-time employment. Minimum 6-month break in service for returning employees to qualify for bonus.
You’ll work collaboratively with other team members, who include a psychiatrist, a pharmacist, nurses, a social worker, institutional counselors, and a team director. As the team’s psychologist, you may administer psychodiagnostic testing to assist in clarifying diagnosis and treatment recommendations for the referring treatment team. You may conduct behavioral analysis to provide insight on treatment approaches that will work best for the patient to decrease challenging, sometimes aggressive, behaviors.
This opportunity is for a clinically robust psychologist with exceptional communication skills who enjoys working on an interdisciplinary team and is interested in learning and using evidence-based practices to facilitate the recovery of patients with challenging behaviors. Previous experience working in an inpatient or forensic setting is preferred but not required for this challenging role.
Some of what you’ll do
- Conduct comprehensive, behaviorally focused assessments for specified patients with highly disruptive or assaultive behaviors.
- Develop comprehensive behavior intervention plans for specified patients with highly disruptive or assaultive behaviors.
- Collaborate with members of the Consult Liaison Service, Treatment Teams, and other relevant staff.
- Provide in-service training and expert clinical consultation on psychological principles regarding behavior and recovery to treatment team members in the application process of proposed treatments for specified patients.
- Attend and participate in required meetings, ongoing continuing education presentations, and supervisor-approved hospital committee meetings.
- Completes all required documentation per hospital policy to meet the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) requirements for billing for psychological services.
Who should apply?
- Professionals with a Doctoral degree in psychology from an APA-accredited school or department of psychology or have a current license to practice psychology in the state of Washington.
- Washington State Department of Health License as a Psychologist, or eligible for licensure.
- Ability to form therapeutic relationships with people with psychiatric disabilities, conduct behavioral analyses, recommend, train in, and consult regarding evidence-based behavioral interventions, understand, and apply principles of mental illness recovery, and work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team.
- In-depth working knowledge of the group and individual behavior and dynamics.
- Working knowledge and skills surrounding therapeutic communication, de-escalation, seclusion/restraint principles, and debriefing.
- Knowledge of relevant hospital, state, and federal regulatory standards, policies, and procedures.
- Knowledge of mental illness and recovery principles.
- A strong understanding of and experience treating complex PTSD is preferred.
- Ability to work with difficult or angry patients in a therapeutic humane non-threatening manner.
- Ability to work as a team member and resolve personal conflicts in a calm, non-threatening peaceful manner.
