Brief Family Assistance Coordinator Overview:
The Family Assistance Coordinator serves as a liaison between the Department and decedent families by locating family members, notifying family of the death, explaining Department processes, obtaining medical and social history of the decedent, and attempting to gather any additional relevant information; maintains essential community relationships with other victim service agencies, chaplains, and others; attends certain death scenes upon request by the Forensic Investigator.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Locates decedent family members, notifies the family of the death, explains Department processes to family, obtains information related to decedent’s medical and social history and all other relevant information needed to assist pathologists with a comprehensive determination of cause and manner of death.
- Identifies appropriate crisis intervention, social services, bereavement, and counseling support, and when necessary, crime victim assistance resources for families.
- Ensures timely communication with Department Forensic Investigators, law enforcement crime victim liaisons, and other relevant people / agencies, to provide accurate case status information; provides for complete transition of information from Division shift to shift and team to team.
- Attends death scenes to assist Forensic Investigators with speaking to family members and others on scene.
- Maintains and continues development of the Volunteer Chaplain Program and coordinates and manages the social work internship program.
