Lecturer – Communication

Job Summary
Lecturer in Communication and Debate. Direct and coordinate the activities of the University’s debate program.  Teach courses in one or more of the Department’s Communication majors (BA and MA in Communication) where needed (Speech and Debate classes essential, ability to teach technical writing a plus).  Plan and supervise semester activities that meet course objectives, maintain records on and evaluate student performance, assign grades.  Also have responsibilities for advising, assessment and service to the department, college, and university.   The position carries an 18 credit teaching load.
 
Qualifications: 
Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Communication or related field
  • One year previous experience directing a debate/forensics program
  • Prior demonstrated experience and knowledge of both policy and parliamentary debate formats

Desired Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in Communication or related field, including law
  • Professional experience or classroom teaching experience in public speaking

 
Other Qualifications: 

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.  Visa sponsorship and relocation allowance is not available for this position.  
  • Report to work obligations to support the department and may require work during HPU’s winter break, if necessary.  
  • Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Protection of Minors policy.
  • Upon hire, candidate must have reliable personal transportation to facilitate travel between to all HPU worksites and other locations as required by the position.   This includes a valid driver’s license and a personal vehicle that is legally registered and insured.
  • This position may also require driving responsibility for an HPU vehicle.  Due to driving responsibilities, you must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with HPU’s Vehicle Driving policy. 
  • Able to teach classes scheduled during days, evenings, and weekends.  [faculty only]
  • Able to teach classes at multiple locations on Oahu.  [faculty only]
  • Successful candidate will be able to work in an environment that utilizes excellent time and stress management skills.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
1. Direct and coordinate activities of the debate program (25%)

  • Recruit students.
  • Supervise graduate assistant coaches.
  • Direct tournaments.
  • Travel to national and international tournaments.
  • Develop collaborative programs linking the campus and the surrounding community.

2. Develop and teach classes (60%)

  • Follow a syllabus of course activities, using established university requirements, appropriate student learning outcomes, and grading methods throughout the semester.
  • Plan and deliver individual classes that conform to the syllabus and other requirements of the University.
  • Maintain records on student participation and performance, evaluate student performance on the basis of established student learning outcomes, and assign grades.
  • Hold office hours and respond to student questions

3. Complete necessary paperwork (10%)

  • Submit required documents (including student grades) in a timely manner.
  • Meet deadlines and follow direction of the program/department chair.

4. Performs other related duties as assigned (5%)

  • Actively participate as an effective member of team by completing assigned duties, accepting additional assignments or reassignments.
