SBI Financial Crime Special Agent

This Financial Crime Special Agent position will be assigned a duty station in one of the following SBI district offices:

  • Northeastern (Greenville, NC)
  • Northern Piedmont (Greensboro, NC)
  • Southern Piedmont (Harrisburg, NC)

Management prefers selected applicant live within a hour of assigned duty station.  This position must travel and work cases anywhere in the state.

This Special Agent position is a professional investigative position using the authority, jurisdiction and resources of the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) to assist local, state and federal law enforcement agencies and judicial officials and to exercise the statutory original jurisdiction of the department. Special Agents assigned to the Financial Crime Investigations Unit are sworn law enforcement officers who conduct a variety of criminal investigations involving complex financial analysis. Job responsibilities include the following:

  • Investigate complex, large dollar loss financial crimes across the state, including embezzlement, obtaining property by false pretenses, and other related financial crimes.
  • Assist other investigators with the financial aspects of arson, drug trafficking, and murder cases.
  • Conduct interviews to obtain information from victims, witnesses, and suspects.
  • Conduct detailed analysis of bank records, contracts, loan applications, business documents, public records, tax records, and any other financial documents that may pertain to the misappropriation of United States currency or other property.
  • Summarize and present findings of analysis in written reports and in detailed spreadsheets.
  • Conduct surveillance to observe and document evidence of criminal activity.
  • Prepare and serve search warrants to obtain records from financial institutions in compliance with the North Carolina Financial Privacy Act.
  • Lead, participate in, or assist with the execution of search warrants on residential and business locations to collect evidence.

An SBI Agent must be able to accurately assess the potential consequences of alternative courses of action and select the one which is most acceptable. The employee in this position must be able to reach a decision quickly when faced with several alternate courses of action. The position requires that the employee be able to comprehend factual information and recall this information as it pertains to laws, statutes and codes. The SBI Agent must speak clearly and intelligently to individuals and groups, as well as over police radio and other electronic transmission equipment.

This is a sworn position with Benefits.  SBI Agents are required to respond on a 24-hour, 7 day per week basis.  The Agent is required to work a 160-hour work period as a minimum, per month. Overtime and on-call duty are required in this position.  This is a sworn position that is subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act and a mandatory probationary period of a minimum of 24 months.
